Don't Kill Me

August 2006 is a tough time to be alive if you're in the womb...Between making it legal for your mother to pop a pill to ease her conscience for sleeping with your father by flushing you out of her life and the world, or your mother having an abortion because you might look or talk funny when you come out (the Chinese woman who aborted her baby who had a cleft lip/palate), trying to ride out a pregnancy as a baby has become a rough ride.

As a man, I've never been pregnant (though I've sometimes looked as if I am). But I do have a cleft palate among other "disabilities" as part of the package of "multiple birth defects" that I was born with. My mother unknowingly became infected with Rubella (called the politically incorrect term "German Measles" at one time). And please call it "Cleft Palate." Even though I've had the condition all my life (though it was sloppily sewed up as an infant by a doctor who was late for lunch and thought I'd be dead anyway), I didn't know you are not supposed to call it "Hare Lip" because that's a remark about your lip looking like a rabbit's until a mother whose baby has the condition took me to task for using it. Either way, I can tell you that although I "talk funny" (see the videos on my web page at http://www.arielion.com), I am happy to be alive. Don't kill me.

You'd think I'd be safe now but it's not a large leap from saying that inconvenient babies in the womb are inconvenient children or adults and are better off dead than being a drag on society. And it's only a small step from there to say that anyone...the elderly, the handicapped, the sick, and maybe you (you've been looking a bit nasty lately and you look so...ethnic...) should die.

Yet all this death is so uneccessary. There is a special group of people who do FREE surgeries (thanks to contributions) to repair cleft lips and palates. They're at http://www.smiletrain.com and I highly encourage you to contribute. All monies go directly to surgeries because a lot of celebrities who are richer than you and I pay the overhead. And there are so many couples who would lovingly give a home to your baby, disabled or not. Besides all that, you will find an amazing amount of strength in yourself and from GOD if you will only ask Him and seek support from family, friends, churches, or Pro-LIFE organizations as close as your phone book. If you are pregnant, feel those hugs from the inside out that are just the beginning of a lifetime of love from your child that will last into eternity.

We may not meet your criteria for a worthy life, but we fit GOD's. His Word says that He has chosen and knows us from the womb (Psalm 139:13). Life is the gift He has given us and not yours to take away (and exchange it for a lifetime of guilt for yourself). Choose Life.
